03 - SILENT SOUNDS

silent sounds book

INSIGHT
Christine Sun Kim is an American sound artist who was born deaf, which led her to focus her artistic career on exploring the materiality of sound through different mediums such as visual arts, compositions, performances, and more. She uses the medium of sound in performance and drawing to investigate her relationship with spoken languages and her aural environment.

GOAL
The main goal of this project was to capture Christine’s artistic essence and wrap it in a simple book. Her delicate black and white drawings were taken as an inspiration to make a minimalistic layout and showcase her inspiring artworks.

OUTCOMEThe book presents her work and history on a simple and delicate way. It focuses mostly on her artwork and the details that each of her drawings have. I decided to use Clarendon as the only typeface in the book in order to capture her fascinating and complex way to explore the meaning of sound.
